Personalized trombone instruction for students of all ages and experience levels, from beginners through advanced musicians.

Improvisation Lessons

Improvisation lessons are available for musicians on any instrument.

Topics may include:

• Learning to improvise over chord changes

• Jazz vocabulary and phrasing

• Scales, modes, and chord-scale relationships

• Rhythm and melodic development

• Learning jazz standards

• Transcription and ear training

• Developing your own musical voice

• Connecting music theory with actual playing

No previous jazz experience is required.

Music Theory Lessons

Music theory lessons are available for musicians on any instrument and can be customized for beginners, advanced students, or musicians preparing for college-level study.

Topics may include:

• Reading music

• Scales and modes

• Intervals

• Chords and harmony

• Rhythm and meter

• Ear training

• Sight singing

• Music analysis

• Jazz theory

• Applied theory for improvisation and composition

Piano, Guitar & Electric Bass

I also offer beginner and intermediate lessons in:

• Piano

• Guitar

• Electric bass

These lessons can focus on fundamentals, reading music, chords, accompaniment, improvisation, playing songs, and developing practical musicianship.

Composition & Jazz Arranging

• For students interested in writing their own music, lessons can focus on:

  • Melody and harmony

  • Song form and musical structure

  • Jazz composition

  • Arranging for small groups or larger ensembles

  • Instrumentation and orchestration

  • Developing and revising original compositions

  • Music notation and score preparation

In-Person & Online Lessons

Lessons are available in person in Atascadero, California, as well as online.

Students from throughout San Luis Obispo County are welcome.
