John Daversa, director

Pianist, composer, and arranger John Beasley reimagines the music of Thelonious Monk with humor and daring in this collaborative large-ensemble project, which vividly conjures Monk’s spirit with an irresistible mix of New Orleans bounce, be-bop, Afro-Cuban grooves, and hip-hop swagger.

Symphonic Ellington: Frost School's Henry Mancini Orchestra

UM Gusman Concert Hall

Scott Flavin, director

Duke Ellington called his music not jazz, but “American Music,” and praised musical artists who impressed him as “beyond category.” Whether writing for the dance club or the concert hall, Ellington himself transcended these categories. You’ll hear the sublime results as the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra revisits three of Ellington’s orchestral jewels, Three Black Kings, Harlem, and The River.

Frost Concert Jazz Band performs the works of Kenny Wheeler w/ Dave Holland and Nick Smart

The music of Canadian trumpeter, flugelhornist, and composer Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) can be deeply lyrical but also full of unexpected turns—from “soppy romantic,” as Wheeler himself once called it, to prickly avant-garde. The Frost Concert Band, conducted by Nick Smart and anchored by bassist and composer Dave Holland, takes up the challenge.

Here's a nice blurb From the Facebook event page:

https://www.facebook.com/events/233830383461313/

"In anticipation of Michael Mull Octet's upcoming debut album, releasing mid-2014. The music fills a void in musical landscape, provoking thought and emotion through outwardly disparate approaches. The Michael Mull Octet is a chameleon ensemble of emerging Los Angeles talent. Performing the original works of composer/multi-instrumentalist Michael Mull, this group explores a soundscape of cinematic colors, deep-seated groove, fiery improvisations, and yearning melody that ranges from sweet and nostalgic to crushing and electrifying.

The compositions are a synthesis of many divergent musical influences, including Wayne Shorter, Pantera, Bjork, Gil Evans, and traditional music from the Balkans, India, and Africa. Listeners will find the music dynamic and colorful, and will hear the unique voice of each player both as a soloist and blended into the ensemble.

The Michael Mull Octet is going into the studio for three days in February to document their music via a debut album, and you can be a part of the project! Contribute by pre-ordering the album in various formats, or consider donating at higher levels to receive unique perks like extra recordings and video, music scores, concert tickets, and even personalized compositions. Search "Michael Mull Octet" at www.indiegogo.com for all the details.

The Baba-Rowan Large Ensemble is a 20-piece band directed by Lauren Baba and Andrew Rowan. Formed by CalArts students in the fall on 2010, this group has developed over the years through the ensemble's collective drive to continue writing and performing new works. The ensemble shares a similar instrumentation to a traditional big band and is most musically influenced by different kinds of jazz music, but it also draws heavily from classical and new instrumental music, rock, hip-hop, and other genres. The ensemble has recorded on three occasions at Capitol Records as part of the CalArts Jazz CDs in 2011 and 2012. Two works received awards: Lauren Baba's "144" winner of 2012 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award and Andrew Rowan's "L.E. 3" honorable mention in 2013 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award."
